CD Projekt Red recently shared a post on Twitter, thanking fans and revealing that the game has sold an astonishing 20 million copies since its release. In addition to the anime, the game has also received some major title updates fixing the majority of the issues that caused the game’s demise in the first place.

Thank you and we hope to see you all in the Afterlife! pic.twitter.com/ifFLhg6npO — Cyberpunk 2077 (@CyberpunkGame) September 28, 2022 While Cyberpunk 2077 is still far from being included amongst giants such as GTA 5 and Minecraft, 20 million copies sold is still remarkable, especially if you consider the rocky launch Cyberpunk 2077 had. Another impressive thing to note is that the game sold 20 million copies in just two years, despite all the bugs and negative reviews it received early on. For comparison, Stardew Valley, one of the most popular games, sold 20 million copies in about six years. Additionally, one of the best open-world games, The Witcher 3 by CD Projekt Red, took almost four years to reach the same sales numbers. The game has been doing so well that even the official investor’s relation account of CD Projekt Red couldn’t resist a celebratory tweet.

— CD PROJEKT IR (@CDPROJEKTRED_IR) September 28, 2022 Despite the unfortunate initial reviews post-launch, the game already had a successful launch that massively contributed to the 20 million copies sold, thanks to roughly 8 million pre-orders. These pre-orders were enough to push the game towards becoming a hit. More than five million sales followed these numbers over the following year. Yes, even with all the bugs. These numbers are nothing to scoff at. Undoubtedly, the underwhelming reception of the game was a surprise for the folks over at CD Projekt Red. However, through perseverance and hard work on their game, the developers have completely turned around the outcome. A few days ago, Cyberpunk 2077 managed to dethrone Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 as Steam’s top-selling game. Many others in the company’s situation would have probably quit, but CDPR continued to refine its game and came back stronger than ever. The anime, combined with the fact that the game will be getting a brand new title update in the form of Phantom Liberty DLC, is sure to retain and entertain both new and returning players for a long time.
