Last we heard, the brains behind Squid game was still “in the process of structuring the story and the new games, and wanting to crystallize them into more detailed ideas.” At the time, Hwang teased that audiences will find clues to the next season in the first season, giving everyone even more of a reason to rewatch the entire thing. But, judging from the revealing message from Hwang, the framework for the second season is already pretty much set. Check out the ominous teaser from Netflix below:

The murderous animatronic has become the mascot of Squid Game after appearing in the game’s first episode where it was responsible for the death of 255 participants in the now-iconic “Red Light, Green Light” game. Although Hwang did not reveal more about Young-hee’s male companion, we can expect him to be just as ruthless if not more terrifying, with possibly his own viral tune that kids and adults alike will be singing for months on end. It’s interesting that it took Hwang and Netflix this long to confirm Season 2 of Squid Game. It was pretty much guaranteed as soon as the series set an insurmountable viewership record. Not to mention, we’ve gotten word of its next season as early as January. But, hey, it’s better late than never, right? Besides, with all the industry budget cuts going on, it can feel like no show is safe. Regardless, Squid Game Season 2 isn’t coming anytime soon. Then again, if the first season of Squid Game took over a decade of work, it’s only natural that the next one take its sweet time getting made. In the meantime, fans can look forward to Hwang’s other upcoming projects. Squid Game’s creator is currently working on a live-action adaptation of a novel by Umberto Eco, which he promises will be “much more violent” than Squid Game.
