GoldenEye 007 was one of the most influential video games of the 90s, helping popularize split-screen gameplay, among many other gameplay features. We ranked GoldenEye 007 near the top of all James Bond games, which only makes it all the more curious as to why a remaster or remake is yet to happen. Now, Achievements for GoldenEye 007 on the official Xbox website are fueling the rumors again.

For some reason, Microsoft occasionally let things slip before their official reveals. Case in point, Tomb Raider: Definitive Survivor Trilogy was leaked by the official Microsoft Store before Square Enix made it official. Going back to the topic of GoldenEye 007, Microsoft previously attempted to remaster the iconic shooter in 2008. For some reason, the game never hit store shelves despite the fact that the game was relatively complete. We found out more about this build after footage of the game resurfaced online last year. Meanwhile, the same Achievements listed on the Xbox website also appeared back in January. There was also a report in February claiming that we’ll hear more about the GoldenEye 007 re-release soon. Having said that, we still have no idea if the upcoming GoldenEye 007 is a full-on remake or an HD remaster. What the achievement list confirms is that every level from the 1997 game will be in the re-release. All things considered, we should hear more about the GoldenEye 007 remaster or remake soon. The James Bond movie franchise’s anniversary will be on October 5 and Microsoft has a big event planned for June 12. When you think about all the evidence on hand, all signs point to an official reveal on Sunday evening with a release date possibly set for October to coincide with the series’ 60th anniversary. Now, as for the question of how Microsoft will pull off a new GoldenEye 007 game, we can only assume that it has worked things out with Nintendo and IO Interactive. As a Nintendo exclusive, Microsoft would need Nintendo to agree to remake or remaster the game. Since we know that Microsoft wants to port Call of Duty to the Nintendo Switch, the two are, at the very least, open to partnerships. In addition, IO Interactive agreed to put Hitman Trilogy on the Xbox Game Pass earlier this year, so there is proof that Microsoft has worked with the companies it needs to make GoldenEye 007 happen in the past six months. Thankfully, June 12 is only a few winks away, so we won’t have to wait too long to confirm our suspicions.
